Temples and more Temples in the Metro Detroit Area.
Reading Nipa Shah's blog at MIIC.com titled "Calling All Asian Indian Leaders in Michigan" prompted me to write this post.
What is the point here. Why do we need so many temples. Is it that Asian Indian Population is increasing in South East Michigan. I doubt it. The region (Metro Detroit) saw the biggest decline in population amongst all the metro areas in United States (check out my earlier post on population decline). Metro Detroit saw its population plunge by 27000.
Nipa in her blog lists 5 temples. BTW Dear Nipa!! we have another Gurdwara coming up in Canton (On Canton Center, south of Palmer Road). Isn't there another Gurdwara in Madison Heights?. Then there is Balaji Temple in Sterling Heights, and then a temple in Pontiac, and one being built in Novi.
Nipa in her blog mentions that couple of friends showed up unannounced at her house "to lighten her family's wallet". This for a new Temple Project. Not sure if she gave them money. I would have not because I don't think we need another Temple!!
In times of Economic hardship, where do they expect the money to come from.....Some one please explain the logic behind this...

Its a game and the name of the game is one-upmanship
Its like "My Temple is or will be better than your temple"
Thanks Virender, for continuing the dialog on this topic. Over the past week I have heard from many and am glad that so many people are thinking along the same lines.
But how will we change this?
As stated in my blog, I invite leaders of all these temples to meet and begin discussing a convergence. We do NOT need to live separated by religious beliefs while living in India and we certainly don't need to do so in the US.
I am happy to facilitate a conversation with community leaders on this and urge everyone to communicate their views to their community so that we can prevent the building of yet another temple in the future.
Hello friends.
I have never heard of any temple in Detroit area.most of them are in canton and farmington.
if there are do let me know
A classic example of oneupmanship is apparent in Grand Rapids Michigan. How would any of you like to get calls at ten at night from people asking for temple donations? To top it off, they get frustrated when the call gets disconnected due to fading phone signals. The west michigan hindu temple is a tamil temple funded and headed and chaired by tamils who have high-paid jobs. They might be able to spare five thousand or two thousand for various pratishtas but not every Indian family is capable of spending that kind of money. While I favor having a place for worship and socialization, I also think of reasonable spending at a time when a lot of us are worried about the dwindling economy. Why build temples and gurudwaras when people can't even talk to each other respectfully? Have you gone to Indian gatherings where you find cliques of women and men who speak Tamil and Telugu and those who don't speak or understand those languages are disrespected?
