Chicken 65. What is it and how do you make it?

Call me ignorant or what, I did not know about "Chicken 65" until I saw it as one of the buffet items in a local Indian restaurant here in the Metro Detroit Area.

So what is Chicken 65? According to wikipedia
The number 65 is variously said to be the number of days taken to prepare the marinade or the year of the dish's creation. One account claims that the dish emerged as a simple meal solution for Indian soldiers in 1965. Another credits the Hotel Buhari in Chennai with creating the dish. Whether true or not, the hotel remains known for serving Chicken 65 to this day.

Other accounts claim that an "enterprising hotelier" targeted macho diners with a 65-chilli recipe and named the dish accordingly. It is generally acknowledged that no one knows which (if any) of these anecdotal theories are true.
Then there is this video from YouTube which not only shows you how to make "Chicken 65" but also attempts to explain the origins of "Chicken 65".

Dr. Asha Patel of Bloomfield Hills - a doctor and a entrepreneur

Meet Dr. Asha Patel who spends her days on medical rounds at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, and at the end of her day, she trades her white coat for an apron, heads into her Bloomfield Hills kitchen and experiments with flavors that could consitute the next product in her Tasha Foods line of curry-based gourmet vegetarian Indian sauces. All are manufactured by Elena's Foods in Auburn Hills. They send 100 cases at a time to various distributors.

Dr. Asha Patel's goal at the moment is expanding the outlets for her sauces (coconut, cashew, ginger garlic and coriander tamarind), which are on shelves in 40 stores. Those include Hiller's Markets; Busch's; Holiday Market; Papa Joe; Market Fresh; Whole Foods; and 250 SuperTargets. Jars retail in the range of $5 apiece. They are free of preservatives and artificial colors and flavors, and are versatile enough to use with meat, fish, tofu or rice.

To save costs Dr. Patel could have sent manufaturing to India but according to her
I could also manufacture in India, but this is working better because I think I get the best quality. If it was in California or India, labor might be a little cheaper. I could probably make more of a profit, but I don't think the quality of my products would be the same

Fireworks in Detroit Metro Area

Staying in town for the July 4th long weekend owing to gas prices? I won't blame you.

Well, if you have family visiting or want to have some summer fun, here is the link to find all the places and the dates for fireworks around the Detroit Metro Area. If you are planning to go into a state park, I would advise you to go there well in the evening time to beat the traffic and relax, barbeque some food and enjoy playing with family. The first time we tried to get into a park just around the fireworks time, it took us two hours to cover a 4 mile distance.

Follow the link to see the fireworks schedule

Lesson learnt and since then we plan to make it to the park at around 5PM, spend some fun time there and wait for the fireworks.

For all the photo enthusiasts, don't forget to take a tripod to get good pictures of your fireworks. I shot this a couple of years ago with camera on tripod and a low shutter speed.

Michigan’s Education System Raises the Bar

(This guest post is written by Heather Johnson, who frequently writes on the subject of instant degree. She welcomes your comments and freelance writing inquiries at: heatherjohnson2323 at gmail dot com.)

High school is not exactly the easiest period in a teen’s life, and Michigan’s youngsters are learning the hard way that it just got harder. Schools across the state just raised the level of coursework included in the high school curriculum. Mathematics, Science, Algebra, Geometry and Social Science have taken on monstrous proportions to students already juggling schoolwork, raging hormones and the terrible teenage years. There are no second chances since one failed class means graduation is delayed, and with the onus of implementing the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) falling on the shoulders of the school and its staff members, every child who does not graduate in four years contributes to the drop in the level of the school’s standards.

The children, who are the hardest hit, are questioning the reason behind this new policy because they feel it inconveniences them in various ways:

Since the new policy has come into effect only this year, the gap between the standards of the last year of middle school and the first year of high school seems like a yawning chasm that the kids are unable to bridge with regular hours of study. They’re forced to learn subjects that are difficult even at normal levels like mathematics and algebra at a much higher standard – freshmen are now learning things that were earlier included in the syllabus for junior and senior year students. Students who are unable to cope and avoid doing homework have to compulsorily give up their lunch breaks or stay behind after school to complete their assignments and take extra classes.

The children are sore because most of them have already decided their future careers, vocations where advanced mathematical principles would stick out like a sore thumb. Freshmen are unable to get their seniors’ help since the older children themselves are just learning the same curriculum.

As if extra lessons on school days are not enough, weaker children and those who fail a class are taking online classes or credit recovery courses over the summer. Even the bright students are finding homework assignments to be extremely tough.

Looking at things on a positive note, schools and their teaching staff are rising to the occasion to help children struggling to cope by putting in extra hours themselves. For doubts and questions that arise after school or tuition hours, online help is always available. The schools are bearing the added expenditure incurred in paying the staff for working overtime and for transportation costs incurred in driving those who stay behind after school hours to catch up on their coursework.

Officials are justifying the policy as a necessary step in the process of providing the future workforce of Michigan with a solid foundation that will help them perform better when they take on college degrees and graduate into members of the earning fraternity. Obviously they’re hoping to catch them young! But in the eyes of the children, it’s a big leap indeed, one that leaves them little or no time at all for the fun things that high school students would love to do.

India's Wipro Ltd has plans to expand their operations in Michigan

This is great news for Michigan. eMediaWire is reporting that
Wipro Ltd., a rapidly growing Indian IT, engineering and business-process outsourcing company, has plans to expand their operations in Michigan.
With home prices being at its lowest this is a great time to move into Michigan.

eMediaWire further reports
Wipro Ltd. has recently entered into a new lease in the National City Center building on West Big Beaver in Troy. The new building is located very near to Quantech Global Services LLC, Wipro's first presence in the area. The Bangalore, India-based company has been immensely successful and now sees Michigan as ripe with talent and opportunities.

"The company has had 'ongoing' discussions with state officials regarding future expansion opportunities," said Sridhar Ramasubbu, CFO-Americas. The Troy office "is the first step towards bigger plans for Michigan," Ramasubbu said. "The company's software development centers provide outsourced engineering services, applications management and business process management. The new Troy office ultimately could house 100 employees."

The Michigan center will be part of a global recruiting strategy that leverages local talent for Wipro's outsourced engineering services. "This center will look at supporting the engineering services, but could be expanded to offer the other services as well," Ramasubbu said.

Indian Orthodox Church in Warren, MI is the Largest in United States

St. Thomas Orthodox Church of India, the first Indian Orthodox church built in Michigan is the largest in the United States.

Niraj Warikoo reports in today's Detroit Free Press
During three days last weekend, the local members of the Indian Orthodox Church consecrated St. Thomas Orthodox Church of India. Filled with the colors and sounds of India, the festivities in Warren reflected how much the faith is rooted in the country's traditions.

Over the centuries, Catholics and Protestants from Europe tried to stamp out the church, unwilling to tolerate its syncretic culture. But the church managed to survive and flourish; today, it has about 3 million members worldwide, roughly 650 of them in metro Detroit

What2Eat: Indian flavours at American restaurants

Did you know that COSI sandwich place now offers Tandoori Chicken sandwich and Salad?

They have introduced it a while ago but, I have discovered it recently. The sandwich is offered in either rustic bread or a multi grain bread. Multi grain is awesome. The sandwich is cold but, you can ask for the tandoori chicken pieces and the filling to be warmed up for a few seconds before they make the sandwich. They would be more than happy to do it.

COSI is available in Rochester Hills, Birmingham, Southfield, Farmington Hills and Ann Arbor.

Another restaurant I found this in, is California Pizza Kitchen. CPK as it is called, has a pizza with mango slices and tandoori chicken that rocks. The curry sauce underneath has a perfect flavour.
We have had it many times and don't forget to get that Tiramasu at the end of your meal. There is no other place that makes Tiramasu like CPK does.

CPK is available at zillion places while not being limited to Clinton Township on Hall Road, Somerset mall in Troy, Livonia and Farmington Hills.
Enjoy your family dining experience.

About "Michigan India Community Blog"

I started "Michigan India Community Blog" back in October 2006. What I had in mind then and still is to share information with the community about India related news and community events. In addition to news and events I also write about Indians in Michigan being mentioned in local or national media. So if you or your friends have made news do let me know and I will mention it. Even if is not news related and its something which our community might benefit from then do let me know. Also if you have a business which you have just launched do let me know and I will mention it here.

"Michigan India Community Blog" sits under the umbrella of "mibazaar.com". I don't take in any advertising money (yet). I rely on Google Adsense to cover my web hosting costs. Looks like I must be doing something right because some other local Michigan Indian Website has just started to blog. Starting a Blog is good but what is interesting is that the title of their blog is the same as my blog which is "Michigan India Community Blog" and remember I started blogging in October, 2006.

If any one you are wondering who am I then check out my "about me" page. Just sit back and follow my journey. You don't have to click anything.

Russert Hailed As One Of The Best

(This post submitted by Naveen Sharma (248-797-9707) (naveen@4nse.com)
Tim Russert, host of NBC's "Meet the Press," died Friday after suffering an apparent heart attack. He was 58.

Tom Brokaw, the former anchor of "NBC Nightly News," came on air during a special report Friday afternoon and said Russert collapsed and died while at work in the NBC news bureau in Washington , D.C.

Brokaw said Russert's death came during a political campaign that "he loved." He called Russert a "beloved colleague" and "one of the premier journalists of our time."

"And I think I can invoke personal privilege to say that this news division will not be the same without his strong, clear voice," Brokaw said. "He'll be missed as he was loved, greatly."

Russert is survived by his wife, Maureen Orth, a writer for Vanity Fair magazine, and his son, Luke. Russert had recently returned from Italy , where his family had been celebrating his son's graduation from Boston College .

NBC released a statement Friday afternoon, calling Russert's passing devastating.

"We have lost a beloved member of our NBC Universal family and the news world has lost one of its finest. The enormity of this loss cannot be overstated. More than a journalist, Tim was a remarkable family man. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Maureen, their son, Luke, and Tim’s entire extended family," Jeff Zucker, NBC Universal's chief executive officer, said in a statement.

NBC colleague Brian Williams said, "He was a giant in our company, in our lives, and in the combined fields of journalism and politics."

Russert joined NBC News in 1984. He took the helm of "Meet the Press" in December 1991 and turned it into the most widely watched program of its type in the nation. His signature trait there was an unrelenting style of questioning.

Earlier this year, Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world. Washingtonian magazine also once dubbed Russert the best journalist in town, and described "Meet the Press" as "the most interesting and important hour on television."

Russert was born in Buffalo , N.Y. , on May 7, 1950. He is a graduate of John Carroll University and also graduated with honors from the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law.

President George W. Bush hailed the newsman as "an institution in both news and politics for more than two decades."

"Tim was a tough and hardworking newsman. He was always well-informed and thorough in his interviews. And he was as gregarious off the set as he was prepared on it," Bush said.

Tim Russert will be greatly missed.

Shopping: Where to buy Dhol (or Percussion instruments)

I have been lazy lately and the winter induced some lack of motivation as well. Jeez, I sound like a true Michigander. Well anyway, here I am.

Vinny (my husband) plays dhol so, we were shopping for some percussion instruments last year, DHOL in particular and found Kalakendar.

Kalakendar is a wonderful musician's haven, based out of Toronto, Canada. They have a full service online store for sales on various instruments and also offer repair and service, parts for some instruments and such.

The music warehouse was formed in 1992 and specializes in authentic Indian instruments. They carry a variety, covering String, Percussion, Wind and electronic instruments and more. The site is neatly organized with pictures of what you buy. We bought a dhol and it was 'what you see is what you get'. It arrived safely in a tight packing with beautiful decorative tassles, the dhaga (Bass end stick) and the Tilli (Treble end stick) and a protective case. A follow up was made promptly from the store asking us how the experience was.

For those who want to drive to check out the store, it is located at this address.
1440 Gerrard Street East (2nd Floor) Toronto,ON M4L 1Z8 Canada

Reach them by phone: 866-87-SITAR or 416-463-3111
Customer Service/Questions: 416-463-4741
Website: http://www.kalakendar.com/

Business Hours: EST
Monday to Thursday 11:30am - 8pm (Closed Friday)
Saturday & Sunday 12noon - 8 pm

Vinny is very happy with the dhol. "The sound is awesome", he grins!

He recently played it at the detroit westin hotel at the airport for a baraat. The hotel management got 13 complaints in 10 minutes, as the sound was bothering them. After all, those business travellers are trying to get an hour of good sleep.

India trumps Michigan?

India Trumps Michigan at least in the world of extraterrestrial art (via MLIVE)
A 75-pound nickel-and-iron meteorite resembling Michigan's Lower Peninsula sold at auction Sunday for $20,000, less than its expected price of $32,500 to $40,000.

Michigan native Darryl Pitt, the meteorite's owner, says he was disappointed by the low price. He says the anonymous buyer got a bargain. Pitt believes the space rock is worth $50,000.

Another nickel-iron meteorite, which weighs three-quarters of a ton and resembles the Indian subcontinent, sold at the same auction for $90,000.

Pitt says there was "greater interest" in India than in the Great Lakes State at the auction, held at Heritage Auction Galleries in Dallas.
Now wait a second Mr. Pitt. You got $20,000 for a 75 lb Michigan shaped meteorite item which is $266.67/lb and the Indian Sub-Continent shaped Meteorite weighing 1680 lbs fetched $90,000 which is $53.58/lb. So who got a better deal?

Grand Rapids area's First Hindu Temple

Grand Rapids area's First Hindu Temple is all set to open on June 13th, 2008. Check out Western Michigan Hindu Temple website for more details.

This is great news for Indians in the Grand Rapids Area because before they had to travel to either Kalamazoo, Lansing, Chicago or Detroit to visit a Hindu Temple. From mlive.com
A group of about a dozen Indians decided in 2002 to build a temple and put in seed money. Two years later, they bought 5.7 acres at 4870 Whitneyville Ave. SE and announced plans for an 8,000-square-foot temple.

Construction began last year on the building set into a wooded hillside. About $750,000 of its $1 million cost has been met through donations. Backers are prepared to take out a loan for the rest, said board treasurer Sridhar Sundaram.
Here's a Bird's eye view from maps.live.com of the Temple Construction Site.

Satyagraha an English Word?

I was under the impression that Satyagraha is an Indian Word. Apparently I am wrong. Satyagraha is also an English word because....

Justin Song a 13 year old 8th Grader from Carmen Valley Middle School, San Diego, California was asked to spell "Satyagraha" in round 10 of National Spelling Bee Competition. Unfortunately Justin was eliminated because he misspelt the world Satyagraha as Sattyagraha.

From Wikipedia
Satyagraha (Sanskrit: सत्याग्रह satyāgraha) is a philosophy and practice of nonviolent resistance developed by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (also known as "Mahatma" Gandhi). Gandhi deployed satyagraha in campaigns for Indian independence and also during his earlier struggles in South Africa.
Maybe in the 82nd National Spelling Bee someone will be asked to spell "Gandhigiri" :-)
